Why does my eye colour look different than what I see in the mirror?

An iris photo often looks different from your everyday reflection because my macro lens and my flash reveal microscopic fibre textures, hidden undertones, and light scattering pigments that mirrors and ambient room lighting can not capture. 

Melanin acts like a yellow-brown filter over underlying structural blue tones, creating shifting shades of green, hazel, or amber under direct light.

I find this the most fascinating thing about the iris images. Often they are not what we see with our own eyes. They hold little surprises of colour and patterns.
